Every August, I notice something begins to shift.
The mornings arrive just a little earlier. The evenings linger a little longer. Stores fill with backpacks and notebooks, calendars begin filling up again, and families settle into new routines.
Even though I haven't been a student for some time, August still feels like the beginning of something new.
This year that feeling is especially strong in our family.
Our youngest is starting middle school, and five of our adult children are heading off to, or continuing on with college. Watching each of them step into a new season has reminded me that life is always changing. Some changes come with excitement, others with uncertainty, but each one asks us to grow in ways we never expected.
I've been thinking about that while working at my bench these past few weeks.
As I shape silver, choose gemstones, and finish new designs, I'm reminded that creating jewelry isn't all that different from moving through life's seasons. Every piece begins with possibility. Sometimes the path changes. Sometimes an unexpected detail becomes the very thing that makes the finished piece special.
That idea has been quietly inspiring our newest Pacific Coast Collection.
The California coastline has always been one of my favorite places to reset. There is something about standing at the edge of the ocean that helps quiet the noise of everyday life. The rhythm of the waves reminds us that life has seasons—times of movement, times of stillness, and moments where both exist at once.
As I selected gemstones and shaped each design, I found myself thinking less about creating jewelry and more about creating little reminders.
Reminders to slow down.
To notice beauty.
To breathe deeply.
To carry a small piece of peace with us, even on the busiest days.
That's one of the things I love most about handmade jewelry.
It becomes part of our everyday lives. A necklace worn every morning. Earrings that become favorites without us even realizing it. A ring we reach for when we need a little reminder of who we are.
Jewelry has a quiet way of collecting our stories.
Perhaps that's why I still love making every piece by hand after all these years.
